William Charles Watters III, MS, MD

Dr. Watters received his Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin in Psychology and his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed 2 residencies, one in Internal Medicine and one in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania prior to moving to Houston, Texas to chair the Department of Orthopedics at a large private clinic. He currently is in private practice specializing in spinal surgery in a 9-man orthopedic group in Houston and is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Departments of Orthopedics at both The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Watters has written widely on spinal disease, patient safety and evidence-based medicine and has over 60 publications as well as 106 presentations nationally and internationally. He has served on many boards and committees during his career and currently sits on the Board of Directors of the North American Spine Society as Council Chair and Director of Research and The American Board of Spine Surgery. Dr. Watters has represented the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery at the National Quality Forum, the National Center for Quality Assurance and as Co-chair of the AMA Consortium on the development of performance measures for spinal stenosis. He has been involved in Clinical Practice Guideline development at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery for over a decade and sits on the Evidence-based Practice Committee and is the Chairman of the Guideline and Technology Assessment Oversight Committee whose purpose is overseeing all Clinical Practice Guideline development and Technology Assessments produced by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.
