A. Lee Osterman, M.D

A. Lee Osterman, M.D. is one of the country’s leading hand experts. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Dr. Osterman graduated from Yale University summa cum laude before earning his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. After a surgical internship at Mt. Sinai Medical School in New York City, Dr. Osterman returned to the University of Pennsylvania for an Orthopedic Residency and a Hand Surgery Fellowship, followed by a Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at Duke University.

By this time, as a professor and a consultant, Dr. Osterman had begun sharing his considerable knowledge of orthopedics and the hand, and by the age of 33 he was on the attending staff of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Graduate Hospital, Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital, and Presbyterian Hospital. He has since added Delaware County Memorial Hospital and Mercy Haverford Hospital to this list, and is currently Professor of Orthopedic and Hand Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

As one of the world’s foremost hand specialists, Dr. Osterman has published numerous scientific papers and chapters, delivered dozens of national and international presentations, and taught or helped teach scores of post-graduate courses across the country, all dealing with orthopedics and the hand. In addition, he has held numerous graduate course chairmanships, visiting professorships, guest lectureships, and editorships; sat on various committees; helped create instructional videos and audio tapes; participated in cutting edge research; and won myriad awards and honors, including selection to the prestigious “Best Doctors in America.” In 1993, he joined the renowned hand experts of The Hand Centers to provide the premiere care for every aspect of medical treatment for the hand. He is Professor of Hand and Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. He divides his time between teaching (not only locally but around the world), writing (he has edited one of the most popular hand surgery text Rehabilitation of the Hand), and an active clinical practice.

He finds enjoyment in the mountains of Colorado where he spends part of the summer biking, hiking, and absorbing good music in the natural beauty of the arena.
