Annunziato Amendola, MD, elected to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board

SAN FRANCISCO –Iowa based orthopaedic surgeon Annunziato (Ned) Amendola, MD, was elected to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Board of Directors at its 2012 Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

“It’s an honor to be a part of the Academy’s Board of Directors,” said Dr. Amendola. “For many years I’ve been involved in the organization’s educational courses and several committees. This is an ideal opportunity for me to give back by helping to advance the practice of orthopaedic surgery, and to collaborate on various projects.”

Dr. Amendola specializes in sports medicine and is professor of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation, with a secondary appointment in the graduate school for physical therapy, and currently holds the John and Kim Callaghan Endowed Chair in Sports Medicine at the University of Iowa. He earned his medical degree and completed orthopaedic residency at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Amendola is the recipient of more than 15 awards for his research and papers, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Cabaud Award for Excellence in Basic Science Research, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Roger Mann Award for best clinical research paper, the Leonard Goldner Award for Best Research Paper and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Achilles Research Award. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 peer reviewed papers, four medical books and has written more than 35 book chapters.

Dr. Amendola sits on the board of several other medical organizations including the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), AOSSM and ISAKOS.

Dr. Amendola had many mentors along the course of his career, but credits getting interested in orthopaedics, to his father-in-law, Dr. Edward Blair who is a past recipient of the Academy’s Humanitarian Award and Dr. Jack Kennedy, former Chair of Orthopaedics at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada who encouraged him to pursue orthopaedic sports medicine.

“The absolute best part of my job is to be able to see a patient, recommend treatment and see them do really well after surgery,” said Dr. Amendola. “Helping a patient regain mobility and return to their active way of life makes my profession so rewarding.”

When Dr. Amendola is not helping patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife Alison, and their four children.
