Wellington Hsu, MD


Dr. Hsu is a practicing spine surgeon and assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Department of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.  He specializes in degenerative conditions of the spine, trauma and minimally invasive instrumentation.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Hsu serves as the director of the Professional Athlete’s Spine Initiative (PASI), which has compiled data on elite athletes who have been treated for spinal disorders, both nonoperatively and surgically.  Dr. Hsu also heads The Laboratory for Regenerative Technologies at Northwestern University, where his basic research interests focus on tissue engineering strategies as bone graft substitutes for spine fusion. He currently serves on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Communications Cabinet as the liaison to the Council on Research, Quality Assessment, and Technology.  This past fall, he was internationally recognized as an American Orthopaedic Association – North American Traveling Fellow as part of an academic tour of 17 prestigious orthopaedic surgery departments.

Dr. Hsu earned his medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn., and completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California – Los Angeles Medical Center.  Dr. Hsu completed his training with a spine surgery fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
