CAPT Covey is Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Naval Medical Center, San Diego. After earning his medical degree from the University of Washington, CAPT Covey completed his internship and orthopaedic residency at Louisiana State University and his fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He has authored many articles ranging from basic and clinical science to operational medicine, and is the recipient of large research grants. He has received several awards and honors, including an American Orthopaedic Association North American Traveling Fellowship, the Colonel Brian Allgood Memorial Award for Excellence in Military Orthopaedic Leadership, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Award for Excellence in Military Medicine, and the Sir Henry Wellcome Medal and Prize for outstanding military medical research. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (USMC) and Legion of Merit (Navy). He has twice deployed to Iraq, serving with Marine Corps forward surgical teams in Fallujah and elsewhere.
